November Wrap Up

It's unbelieveable to me that we are already wrapping up November and are heading into the holiday season! For anyone who is counting, only 14 more school days left until X-Mas break! ;)

It has been an absolutely fantastic month of swimming in the YD group. We have survived our first two meets, the Penguin Novice Series and our own Poppy Invitational (with well over 90% best times!!), and we are headed towards the end of this cycle's meets.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
November's attendance is as follows:

Georgia - 13/14
Roxanne - 13/14
Sharanya - 11/14
Rizal - 11/14
Chantelle - 10/14
Mark - 9/14
Jaci - 9/14

Hopefully, we are at the end of the 'sickness cycle' that this month brought. Remember to stay hydrated, to eat nutritious foods, get plenty of sleep, and to wash your hands! Let's go for a higher percentage of attendance in December!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upcoming Meets

1. As many of you know, the JP Fiset meet has instilled qualifying times for the meet this year, and unfortunately for everyone at STSC, we have people affected by this as well. For Fiset, you may also only swim for events you are qualified in. This time around:

Mark - swimming Fri., Sat., Sun.
Roxanne - swimming Sat.
Chantelle - swimming Fri., Sat., Sun.
Georgia - swimming Fri., Sat., Sun.

I will post individual events by day of the meet a little later in the week.

2. The EKSC Vorgee meet (December 11, 4 - 8 p.m. at Bonnie Doon Pool) is an opportunity that has been presented to us in lieu (or in addition for some swimmers) of the Fiset Meet. All swimmers in our group who are 14 & Under are eligible for this meet. I have received some confirmations on attendance thus far. If you have not responded back, please email the Head Coach, Chris Nelson at chris.nelson@silvertide.ca to confirm if you are, or aren't, attending this additional racing opportunity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
December Schedule

Our last practice prior to the holiday break is on Saturday, December 12 at our regularly scheduled time. A new schedule that will involve Christmas Training times (around the 28th of December) will be posted on the website shortly. Stay tuned! I will also send out an email in regards to times and practice days as soon as they are available.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Have a great holiday season everyone and see you on deck!

Penguin Meet

It was a fantastic meet for two of the YD swimmers this past Saturday, November 7th at the Penguin Novice meet.

Both Georgia and Chantelle had some wonderful swims in the first meet of the season.

Chantelle swam through some tough races, including a 50 free where her goggles completely fell off, but she stayed focused despite some lane rope crashes and a very tight turn. Chantelle had best times in her 100 IM and her 25 Backstroke, and was only 0.1 seconds off of her best 50 Breast. Great swimming with only 17 workouts so far this season! Chantelle's hard work and focus really paid off in her technique in all 4 strokes. She looks like a brand new swimmer with great body position, body roll, and skills in her races. Way to go Chantelle!

Georgia also had some great swims at the Penguin meet, starting out the meet with a stellar 30.6 in the 50 free, and a solid 100 IM time of 1:18 to wrap up the meet. She also came very close to best times in the 50 Back and 50 Fly, and swam a 25 Breast to a rocket of a time of 18.98 seconds. Georgia was by far the best swimmer in the meet when it came to her underwaters, often crushing the competition by 3 meters off her turns. Great work!

This meet was a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with the girls between swims. Everyone at the meet had a good time, swam well, and is looking forward to the next meet. Hopefully, the YD will have more and more swimmers attending meets throughout the season, whether they are hosted by Silver Tide, or by other clubds throughout the province.

See you at the pool!

October Attendance

What a great start to the season!

October Attendance is as follows:

Roxanne - 16/16
Georgia - 14/16
Sharanya - 13/16
Rizal - 13/16
Chantelle - 12/16
Mark - 9/16
Jaci - 7/16

I know that there are a lot of 'bugs' going around this fall. Be sure to keep yourself hydrated and well nourished, as well as getting enough sleep, to try to avoid any illnesses this season. If you are feeling 'off' and need to miss a workout or two to get yourself healthy again, please do! You cannot train your best if you are not feeling well. Just remember to let me know so I am not worried!

Thanks to everyone who attended Saturday's Halloween Extravaganza! Fun was had by all.

See you on deck!

Halloween is Approaching!

Don't forget about the special Halloween practice on Saturday (9:30 - 12)!

October at Silvertide

Well, with three weeks in, there has been a lot of improvements within the YD group.

Focus thus far has been on skill and stroke techniques, from flip turns to underwater dolphins, and from freestyle to breaststroke. I am so pleased with the concentration and focus from all of the swimmers in trying to improve their strokes, and I know in the end, HUGE improvements will be seen in the upcoming meets.

To start, the YD swimmers have done some timed kicking efforts, to gage both their sprinting and their endurance in kick. The results are as follows:

200 Kick - October 13
Georgia - 3:18.7
Roxanne - 3:30.9
Chantelle - 3:53.5
Jaci - 4:51.8
Sharanya - 5:23.4
Rizal - 5:57.8

50 Kick - October 15
Georgia - 40.6
Roxanne - 42.5
Mark - 55.8
Sharanya - 1:02.9
Rizal - 1:10.4

We will be doing these kick tests again in December, and I am sure we will see a huge improvement!

An attendance and monthly update will be posted later in the week. Just a reminder that there is workout on Halloween (Sat. morning), and that the Penguin Novice Series meet is the following weekend, on November 7. There will be no practice on this Saturday for those not attending the meet, as I will be coaching at the meet.

Again, anytime you have a question or need to get a hold me, don't hesitate to do so at michelle.nelson@silvertide.ca

See you at the pool!

Welcome to a New Season!

Welcome to a new season everyone!

I hope that this blog is helpful throughout the year, and my goal for the season is to update it on a weekly basis with all information that you need.

I would like to start with a brief introduction about myself for those of you who aren't familiar with my coaching career.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been involved with the sport of swimming for close to 20 years now, both as a coach and as a swimmer. I competed at many high level competitions, including Senior Nationals, where I finaled in the 200m Butterfly on a few occasions, the World Cup Circuit, and CI's with the University of Alberta, where I was captain of the team in my final year of university.

Right after I retired from the sport, I found myself in the coaching world. I have already coached for the past 8 years, and have experience coaching at all levels, from beginning swimmers in the I Can Swim program, to Provincial and National Age Group record holders.

I am very excited to be coaching the Youth Development group this year, and am looking forward, and am committed to, a year of huge technical and time improvements for all swimmers in the group!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
October - A few things to remind everyone of:

1. Our training schedule for the season is as follows:

Tuesday
Dryland - 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.
Swimming - 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday
Swimming - 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Thursday
Swimming - 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

Saturday
Dryland - 9:30 - 10:00 a.m.
Swimming - 10:15 - 11:45

* I would like everyone to arrive 15 minutes prior to the start time each workout to ensure that they get a good stretch in, and that we are able to start on time and maximize the time that we have together.

2. Waterbottles

Be sure to bring in your waterbottles. Athletes need to remain hydrated throughout training, especially if you are prone to getting foot cramps!

3. Setting Goals

We are going to be filling in goal sheets this upcoming week. I want everyone to think about wat their goals are for the year, including: skill based goals (turns, starts), technique based goals (stroke technique), and time goals.

4. Parent Meeting

There will be a brief parents' meeting for all parents of swimmers in the YD group on Tuesday, October 20 at 7:30. I would love to meet everyone, and have a few things to go through regarding group training this year.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That's all for now! See you at the pool!
